April 1st signified the start another season of migration monitoring at the Tommy Thompson Park Bird Research Station (TTPBRS). While the season started out slowly due to some lingering winter weather conditions, the spring migrants have begun to trickle in to the Toronto Region and we have already made some interesting observations.
Before the winter weather returned we had one day of banding on April 1, dominated by golden-crowned kinglets. We were then closed for 11 days during the cold snap and upon reopening on April 12 we re-captured many of the kinglets banded the week before, and they had gained fat! This is a great sign that the habitat at Tommy Thompson Park provides ideal shelter and food for migratory birds!
Visit TTPBRS on weekend and holiday mornings until June 5. We are located on Peninsula D at Tommy Thompson Park. Support our monitoring and research programs by becoming a member or purchasing a Gift of A Local Nature.
