Migration Monitoring: September 18 - 24

http://www.rap.ucar.edu/weather/radar/

It has been an interesting week at TTP. It was beginning to feel like fall, with chilly mornings that had us bundling up in sweaters and coats, able to see our breath. Then we were hit with a tropical heat wave that had us swooning. On Tuesday the birds all but disappeared, the park quiet except for flocks of noisy Blue Jays. The few remaining birds took flight that night, leaving the park eerily still. Before leaving on Thursday morning, I checked the radar to see if there was any indication that a new wave would be coming through. Indeed! The image above shows bird migration over Lake Ontario and Lake Erie at 4:59 AM. As you can see, most of the migrants made it over or around the lake, but as we found out yesterday morning, lots of them landed here. The trees were dripping with birds! Everywhere was the fluttering of wings, the chipping of songbirds, the snap of a flycatcher’s bill, the rapping of a woodpecker. The nets were very busy - we banded 110 birds yesterday! This kind of fallout is incredible to experience. There are still many birds around, so be sure to stop by this weekend!
