Weekly Update: May 2 - May 8

The weather has been gorgeous at TTP this week, and has brought with it a wonderful diversity of migrants. As the trees leaf out, the birds can enjoy better cover and an abundance of insects to feed on.

The Yellow Warblers have returned to breed, and everywhere we turn they are singing their hearts out. Black-capped Chickadees have been busy nesting as well, and one was seen today excavating a cavity for his mate. American Robin nests are everywhere, and many of them already have eggs.

Just when it seems like we have banded every White-throated Sparrow at TTP, more keep flying into our nets! Many of them are bulging with fat, likely to leave any day now for the last leg of their journey. Most of the Hermit Thrushes seem to have moved on, and we had our first Swainson’s Thrush of the season as well as a beautiful Wood Thrush. Every day there are new species arriving, busily gorging themselves in order to refuel for their migratory journey. The trees are filled with colour and music, reminding us why TTP is an Important Bird Area!

New Arrivals: Wood Thrush, Cedar Waxwing, Ovenbird, Eastern Kingbird, Orange-crowned Warbler, Lincoln’s Sparrow, Magnolia Warbler, Warbling Vireo, Least Flycatcher, Indigo Bunting, American Redstart, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Scarlet Tanager, Northern Parula, Willow Flycatcher
