January birds

American Tree Sparrow (Seabrooke Leckie/TTPBRS)

A visit to Tommy Thompson Park Bird Research Station in January is in complete contrast to even just a few months earlier. Very few birds in the station's count area: two small flocks of American Tree Sparrows, as well as the station's resident chickadees (all banded) and male cardinal. Although the embayments are mostly frozen, a few ducks, primarily Common Goldeneye, were found swimming in the patches of open water. Birds elsewhere in the park included a Northern Shrike, a Rough-legged Hawk, a Great Horned Owl, and a pair of American Kestrels.
